Grupa Azoty optimizes costs through port infrastructure. The growing role of ammonia imports
At the Mijanka port in Police, owned by Grupa Azoty, the unloading of ammonia delivered from North Africa has been completed. The import of this key raw material for fertilizer production is a response to the rising costs of domestic production, primarily due to high natural gas prices and climate policy requirements. Producing one ton of ammonia requires at least 950 m3 of natural gas, making imports a more cost-effective solution.

The Police port plays a crucial role in Grupa Azoty’s strategy, as it is home to Poland’s only ammonia transshipment terminal. This facility is continuously modernized and adapted to support both current and planned deliveries. Utilizing the existing port infrastructure is part of the AZOTY BUSINESS Program, aimed at increasing cost and logistics efficiency within the Capital Group.
Due to the dynamically rising costs of ammonia production, linked to energy raw material prices and climate transition requirements, an increasing number of fertilizer producers are opting for ammonia imports. This approach helps lower operational costs and reduce carbon emissions while allowing Grupa Azoty to expand into a new business area.
Grupa Azoty’s port infrastructure in Police has the potential to become a key logistics hub for ammonia imports into the European Union. The terminal offers convenient access to maritime, rail, and road transport, further enhancing its strategic importance. Future development plans include expanding infrastructure, constructing new storage tanks, and modernizing the rail system with loading facilities. These initiatives will significantly streamline the distribution of ammonia both within Grupa Azoty and to external clients interested in purchasing the raw material.
As the largest ammonia producer in Poland and Central and Eastern Europe, Grupa Azoty operates multiple production facilities across the country. At the same time, cost optimization and strengthening Police’s port role reflect a strategic approach to global market trends and the increasing importance of maritime logistics in the chemical industry.
