AI and data centers as a key to competitiveness

The global digital transformation and the growth of artificial intelligence and data centers are among the most crucial aspects of the modern economy. According to the Dragani report, the European Union must intensify investments in digital technologies to remain competitive globally. Poland, particularly Pomerania, has unique potential to lead this transformation.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized this direction in his inaugural speech during Poland's EU presidency at the European Parliament, highlighting the need to build a strong economy based on digital innovation and AI as a foundation for national competitiveness in the 21st century. The Pomeranian AI and CPD Coalition is a response to this challenge.

The Baltic Sea's role in green digital transformation

A key element of the Coalition's strategy is using energy from offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea to power AI and CPD infrastructure. With stable green energy supplies, Pomerania has the opportunity to become a leader in Europe's digital transformation. The combination of modern energy infrastructure and a dynamically growing technology sector opens unique possibilities for building a sustainable and competitive economy.

Stable, green energy as a foundation for AI and CPD development

A stable supply of renewable energy is fundamental for the growth of data processing centers and artificial intelligence.

– Digital and energy transformations must go hand in hand. As a leading energy sector player in Pomerania, Energa SA is working to provide reliable and sustainable energy for the expanding AI and CPD sector. Without access to green energy, Poland cannot become a competitive player in the global technology and services market – said Sławomir Staszak, CEO of Energa SA.

Strategic goals of the Pomeranian AI and CPD Coalition

During the inaugural meeting, three key pillars of the Coalition's activities were defined:

  1. Developing CPD infrastructure – supporting investments in data centers powered by renewable energy.
  2. Collaboration between academia, business, and administration – fostering digital competencies and AI innovation.
  3. Enhancing Poland's competitiveness – attracting global investors and strengthening Pomerania's position as a European digital technology hub.

– At Gdańsk University of Technology, we consistently engage in projects addressing key development challenges in the region. The Pomeranian AI and CPD Coalition, along with the Advisory Economic Team established at the Rector's Office, share a common goal – building a modern economy based on knowledge, technology, and innovation. Combining scientific, business, and administrative potential gives us a unique opportunity to create an ecosystem in the region that will drive digitization, green transformation, and the development of key sectors such as offshore and maritime logistics – said Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, Rector of Gdańsk University of Technology.

A new era for Pomerania's development

The meeting concluded with an agreement on cooperation principles among participants, marking the first step toward implementing an ambitious digital strategy for Pomerania and Poland as a whole. Through the synergy of the energy, academic, and technology sectors, the region has the opportunity to become a key innovation hub in Europe, strengthening its position on the global digital transformation map.
