Sailing marathon in Puck Bay. Polish championships underway
Over a thousand sailors have gathered in Puck Bay to contest the titles of Polish champions. In the coming week, the waters off Puck will host competitions in non-Olympic dinghy classes, windsurfing, as well as the national sprint championships.

– We are opening the first stage of the Polish championships, once again here in Puck. The bay is well known to the sailors and very convenient logistically. Both the town and the marina are open to cooperation, so we really value this place and gladly return – says regatta organizer Weronika Wieżynis.
Windsurfing to open the programme
The first to race are the windsurfers in the Olympic iQFOiL class. Nearly one hundred competitors are on the starting line, including London 2012 bronze medallist Zofia Noceti-Klepacka. National team member Michał Polak also returns after a shoulder injury that forced him to miss last year’s event.
– This year the U23 fleet is the biggest and most competitive. I’m looking forward to close racing and good wind – Polak says.
Sprint format – fast and unpredictable
Parallel to the windsurfing, the bay is also staging the Polish sprint championships. Unlike traditional regattas, sprints feature short, intense races of just a few minutes, with only ten boats or boards on the line after qualification.
– Sprints are exciting and unpredictable. I tell my sailors that consistency is key – you don’t have to win every single race to win the event – explains Kamil Cesarski, coach of Nauticus Olsztyn and president of the 420 class association in Poland.
Nine classes, two ports, five race areas
The main part of the programme is the first stage of the Polish championships, with nine classes on the start line – from traditional dinghies such as OK Dinghy, Europa and Flying Dutchman, to modern foiling craft.
– For the first time we are using two ports and five race areas simultaneously. It’s a huge logistical challenge, but our team is well prepared after Gdynia Sailing Days – Wieżynis underlines.
Catamarans, youth classes and the moth
Also racing are youth crews in the 420 and 29er classes, as well as multihulls Nacra 15 and Hobie Cat 16. The spectacular Moth class again holds its nationals in Puck, this time also with a women’s division. Among the entrants is Anna Weinzieher, Olympian from London in Laser Radial. Windsurfers in Techno 293 (U13 and U17) add further depth to the competition.
Three-stage battle for the title
The first stage of the championships continues until 31 August. The second stage is scheduled for 11–14 September, featuring 505, ILCA 6, Finn, Nautica 450, Omega and Korsarz classes. The final stage will bring the turn of ILCA 6, ILCA 7 and 470 sailors.
– We are glad Puck is the place where sailors from across Poland can meet and compete at the highest level. There is only one Polish champion title in each class, so we expect thrilling regattas – Wieżynis concludes.
