Construction of the vessel began in May 2024 and has progressed according to schedule. A symbolic keel-laying took place in July, and the ferry was successfully launched one year later. The name Bjarkøy reflects the local character of the ferry routes and the strong connection to the northern Norwegian region where it will operate.
The ferry is equipped with two azimuth thrusters driven by vertically-mounted electric motors, powered by batteries with a total capacity of around 2.3 MWh. For backup purposes, the vessel is fitted with two auxiliary generators to ensure full operational capability in case of battery power loss. Under normal operation, the batteries will be recharged from the shore power supply during loading and unloading, which will occur frequently as each crossing takes no more than 12 minutes.
The design of the ferry was developed by The Norwegian Ship Design Company AS, with support from Remontowa Marine Design & Consulting for the working documentation.
The delivery of Bjarkøy marks the continuation of Remontowa’s partnership with the Norwegian operator. Construction will soon begin on another state-of-the-art double-ended ferry intended for service in the fjords around Dønna and Herøy islands.
