Polish merchant ships rescue 40 castaways in the Mediterranean

Two bulk carriers of Polska Żegluga Morska (Polsteam) – MV Drawno and MV Dąbie – successfully carried out a rescue operation in the Mediterranean Sea on Wednesday morning. Forty people adrift on a rubber boat with a disabled engine were taken safely on board. They are now being transported to the port of El Dekheila in Alexandria, Egypt.

Alert from the Rescue Coordination Center in Cairo

According to Krzysztof Gogol, press spokesman of Polsteam, the alarm was raised by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Cairo, which reported a group of people in distress at sea. MV Drawno, on passage to Egypt, immediately diverted to the indicated position.

Sea conditions were rough, with heavy swell and deteriorating weather. Despite the challenges, the crew of MV Drawno acted with full professionalism. Survivors were brought on board via the accommodation ladder and provided with shelter, drinking water, meals, and basic medical assistance.

Krzysztof Gogol emphasized that the crew of MV Drawno demonstrated courage, responsibility, and solidarity with people in danger. He also stressed that saving human life at sea remains the supreme duty of every seafarer.

Support from MV Dąbie

The rescue was reinforced by the presence of the second Polsteam vessel, MV Dąbie, which was nearby and provided assistance. Both ships are sailing from Malta and Spain to Alexandria with commercial cargo.

The coordinated presence of the two Polish bulk carriers made it possible to secure all 40 people in distress and ensure their safe transfer.

Merchant shipping as part of global safety system

The incident highlights the dual role of the merchant fleet: transporting goods and ensuring maritime safety under international law. According to SOLAS and UNCLOS regulations, every ship is obliged to render assistance to people in peril at sea.

Polsteam, the largest Polish shipowner, maintains high standards of safety and crew training. This professionalism allows Polish seafarers to respond effectively even in adverse conditions.

Mediterranean migration route – a persistent challenge

The Mediterranean remains one of the most dangerous migration routes globally. Thousands attempt the crossing in unseaworthy boats and inflatable rafts, often without proper equipment. Many vessels suffer breakdowns or capsize long before reaching their intended destination.

Merchant ships often become first responders in these emergencies. The successful rescue by MV Drawno and MV Dąbie once again underscores the vital contribution of commercial shipping to maritime safety.

Polish seamanship recognized

Thanks to the rapid and decisive actions of Polish crews, 40 people are alive today. This operation enhances the international recognition of Polish seamanship, highlighting the competence and ethical standards of the national fleet.

Krzysztof Gogol confirmed that upon arrival in Alexandria the survivors will be transferred to the care of local authorities. MV Drawno is expected to dock in El Dekheila on Thursday.
