First monopiles for Baltica 2 leave production hall. Offshore wind farms rise in the Baltic

The first batch of monopiles for the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm, jointly developed by Ørsted and PGE, has left the production hall – marking a major milestone in the project’s delivery schedule.

Monopiles are the primary load-bearing structures of offshore wind farms, transferring the weight of turbines and the forces of waves into the seabed. For Baltica 2, a total of 111 monopiles will be installed – 107 to support wind turbines and four for offshore substations. These massive steel structures measure between 7.5 and 10.5 meters in diameter, with wall thicknesses ranging from 60 to 112 mm depending on their final location.

The manufacturing process includes plate rolling, longitudinal and circumferential welding, full non-destructive testing (NDT) and application of multilayer anti-corrosion coatings. Completion of the first batch paves the way for sea transport preparations and acceptance of subsequent sections, while quality checks and coating works continue in parallel.

Two suppliers – EEW and Steelwind – are responsible for delivering the monopiles, with EEW manufacturing 77 of them. The first load-out onto transport vessels is scheduled for late 2025.

- Monopiles are among the most demanding components of any offshore wind investment. We are talking about structures up to 100 meters in length and around 1,900 tons each, designed to last for decades, said Patrick Harnett, Chief Construction Officer / Executive Vice President, Ørsted. - We are pleased to confirm that production is progressing according to schedule. As a flagship offshore wind project in Poland, Baltica 2 also remains a key element of Ørsted’s global construction portfolio and our 8.1 GW offshore build-out programme for 2025–2027.

The development of Poland’s offshore wind supply chain is also gaining momentum, with most additional steel components for Baltica 2 foundations being produced locally. Baltic Industrial Group and Smulders will supply secondary steel structures.

- The start of monopile production is a clear sign that we are approaching the first offshore installation activities, said Maciej Górski, Vice President of Operations, PGE. - Initial seabed clearance and site preparation are already underway. Next, we will begin driving the foundations that will support 107 turbines – each 250 meters tall – and four offshore substations. Our goal is to deliver first power from Baltica 2 to Polish households in Q2 2027.

Onshore works are also progressing. In Choczewo, the onshore grid connection infrastructure is under construction, including a new substation and HDD drillings to link subsea export cables with the national transmission grid. All works are performed to the highest QHSE standards, with a focus on minimizing the project’s carbon footprint through waste reduction, energy efficiency and durable coating systems.

Once commissioned in 2027, Baltica 2 will become the largest offshore wind farm built in Polish waters, delivering up to 1.5 GW of green energy – enough to power approximately 2.5 million homes.
