Remontowa Shipbuilding to build hybrid passenger-car ferry for Torghatten Midt
Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A., part of the Remontowa Holding Group, has signed a contract with Norwegian ferry operator Torghatten Midt AS for the construction of a modern hybrid passenger-car ferry. The vessel will operate in Norway’s fjord region, serving routes between the islands of Dønna and Herøy.

The double-ended ro-ro ferry has been designed to carry up to 249 passengers, 85 passenger cars and a maximum of six heavy goods vehicles. Given its operation in environmentally sensitive fjord areas, the project places strong emphasis on minimising energy consumption and reducing CO₂ emissions.
The vessel, bearing yard number B622, will be equipped with a hybrid propulsion system based on two azimuth thrusters fitted with permanent magnet electric motors. Power will be supplied by four diesel generator sets capable of running on 100 per cent biodiesel, supported by a battery energy storage system. The battery pack will cover peak power demand, allowing the generators – typically no more than three in normal operation – to run at optimal load, resulting in improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
The design also incorporates provisions for future expansion of the energy storage system. Several years after delivery, the air-cooled battery packs are planned to be replaced by water-cooled batteries with nearly fifteen times greater capacity. This upgrade will enable fully electric operation. The vessel has already been designed with this future conversion in mind.
The technical documentation is being developed by The Norwegian Ship Design Company AS. Delivery of the ferry to the owner is scheduled for the second quarter of 2028.
Cooperation between Remontowa Shipbuilding and companies within the Torghatten Group has continued for over 15 years. The newly contracted vessel will be the tenth ferry built in Gdańsk for this Norwegian operator.
Remontowa Shipbuilding has established itself as one of Europe’s most experienced builders of hybrid and battery-powered vessels. Over the past seven years, the shipyard has delivered six such units, with a seventh currently undergoing sea trials.
