Beach rescue corridor. OSP Jantar urges tourists to stay alert ahead of summer

As the 2025 summer season approaches and warm weekends begin to fill the Baltic coast, OSP Jantar – a local volunteer fire and rescue unit – is once again launching its innovative project: the Beach Rescue Corridor. This initiative aims to raise awareness and improve emergency access routes on crowded beaches.

First introduced in 2024, the concept is based on the widely recognized "emergency corridor" used on roads. Adapting it to a beach environment, OSP Jantar developed a visual sign that reminds beachgoers to keep a clear path for rescue vehicles. The sign was designed by volunteer firefighter Maja Kozłowska and has since become a vital educational tool along the Polish coast.

Thanks to support from Jantar’s village mayor, Lidia Rosolak, the number of rescue corridor signs has increased to six this year. They are now prominently displayed near key beach entrances around the so-called "port" area – where most emergency launches of the rescue boat take place.

During peak summer months, OSP Jantar, equipped with a sea-ready rescue boat, responds to numerous emergency calls involving swimmers or people in distress. However, navigating through tightly packed beach setups – sunshades, deck chairs, inflatable toys, strollers – can severely delay response time. Although never formally timed, the process of clearing a path often feels like an eternity to rescuers racing against the clock.

OSP Jantar emphasizes the following key points:

  • A beach rescue corridor is not a physical road with lines or posts – it is a mental and behavioral reflex to clear the way immediately;
  • The beach version of the emergency corridor sign is a prompt to remove any obstacles from the route of incoming rescue units;
  • Every beachgoer has a part to play: reacting swiftly and responsibly helps form an effective chain of rescue;
  • On the beach, the speed of help depends not on road signs, but on the people present.

OSP Jantar appeals to everyone enjoying the beauty of the beach and the Baltic breeze: stay alert, react quickly, and do not block emergency access routes. Let’s work together to ensure a safe summer by the Baltic Sea. The editorial team at Daily Mare proudly joins this call to action.

Safe summer 2025? It starts with our responsibility!
