Baltica 2 offshore wind farm reaches key milestone with first transformer installation

The Baltica 2 offshore wind farm, a joint venture between PGE and Ørsted, has reached a major milestone with the installation of the first 225 MVA transformer on one of its four offshore substations. This marks a significant step forward in the production and assembly of key components for what will become Poland’s largest offshore wind farm, with a total capacity of 1.5 GW.

Offshore substations – the heart of the wind farm

Each of the four offshore substations will serve as the central hub for collecting and transmitting the electricity generated by 107 wind turbines located approximately 40 kilometers off the Polish coast.

Each substation is an impressive five-level structure, measuring 45 x 25 x 20 meters and weighing around 3,000 tonnes. Designed for unmanned operation, the platforms will only be visited by maintenance crews when necessary for inspections and repairs.

- An offshore substation is the heart of a wind farm. These massive structures are crucial for ensuring efficient transmission of offshore wind power. The installation of the first transformer is a symbolic moment that demonstrates production progress in line with schedule and the highest safety standards, said Ulrik Lange, managing director of the Baltica 2 project at Ørsted.

Project progressing towards offshore construction

- Advancing to the next stage of substation production clearly reflects the maturity of the Baltica 2 project. We are entering the final phase of preparation before offshore construction begins. The work on these substations is a great example of international cooperation, which is typical for the global offshore wind industry, said Bartosz Fedurek, CEO of PGE Baltica.

The offshore substations are being delivered under a contract between Ørsted, PGE, and the consortium of SEMCO Maritime and PTSC Mechanical & Construction. The contract covers the design, fabrication, and commissioning of all four substations.
Polish engineering company PROTEA SA will supply specialized cranes for the substations, further emphasizing domestic industry participation in this international project.

Safety and precision at the core of operations

The achievement follows 3.3 million work hours without a lost-time incident, as well as 22 critical heavy lifts carried out safely and precisely on the upper decks. Two of the substations are already structurally complete, while the assembly of the remaining two is progressing on schedule.

The entire offshore transmission system for Baltica 2 is expected to be ready for commissioning in 2027, aligning with the planned start of operations for the wind farm.

Powering 2.5 million homes with green energy

Once operational, Baltica 2 will deliver up to 1.5 GW of clean electricity, enough to power approximately 2.5 million households. As the largest offshore wind project in Poland, it will play a pivotal role in advancing the country’s energy transition and strengthening its renewable energy portfolio in the Baltic Sea.
