SAR medevac operation in the Baltic Sea: m/v Lone crew member airlifted to Słupsk hospital

A medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) operation was launched on February 10 after a distress call from the merchant vessel m/v Lone in the Polish Search and Rescue (SAR) region of the Baltic Sea. The rescue boat m/s Huragan from Łeba and a SAR helicopter from Darłowo were dispatched. The patient is expected to be airlifted to a hospital in Słupsk.

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) received a report from m/v Lone requesting urgent medical evacuation of a crew member. Following an operational assessment and medical consultation, the Polish Maritime Search and Rescue Service (MSPiR SAR) initiated a coordinated response.

Both the rescue vessel m/s Huragan, based in Łeba, and a SAR helicopter from Darłowo were deployed to the scene to ensure rapid response and operational flexibility.

- Every medical emergency at sea is treated as a priority. In this case, reducing response time and ensuring safe transfer to a medical facility were critical factors, said Sebastian Kluska, Director of the Polish Maritime Search and Rescue Service (MSPiR SAR).

According to SAR officials, air transport was assessed as the most efficient and safest option given the patient’s condition.

- Simultaneous deployment of surface and air assets allows us to adapt to dynamic maritime conditions and secure the best possible outcome for the patient, Sebastian Kluska added.

The operation was conducted in close coordination with the vessel’s crew and onshore medical services. The patient is expected to be transported by helicopter to a hospital in Słupsk.

The case highlights the operational readiness and interoperability of Poland’s maritime and aerial SAR assets within the Baltic Sea region.
