The MRCC immediately dispatched the rescue vessel Wiatr from the SAR base in Górki Zachodnie. The SAR crew reached the ship, conducted a safe onboard evacuation, and transported the young patient to the quay at the Gdynia Port Captaincy. There, he was handed over to the emergency medical team (ZRM) for further assessment and hospital treatment.
MSPiR SAR operational update
This marked the 46th rescue operation of the year for the Polish Maritime Search and Rescue Service (MSPiR SAR), including the 11th medical evacuation.
Director Sebastian Kluska commented on the operation:
- Our teams maintain full operational readiness both in port areas and offshore. Every rescue is our top priority, and the safety of lives at sea remains our absolute mission. Quick and coordinated actions are essential, particularly when a young crew member’s health is at stake.
Sebastian Kluska also highlighted the importance of close cooperation with local medical services:
- Efficient coordination with Gdynia’s emergency medical teams allows us to transfer patients rapidly and safely, which is crucial for positive outcomes in urgent medical situations.
Port medical evacuation protocols
Medical evacuations in busy port areas like Gdynia require precise coordination and well-prepared rescue units. MRCC continuously monitors maritime traffic, while SAR vessels remain on constant readiness for immediate deployment. Standard procedures include evaluating the patient’s condition, safely boarding them from the vessel, and fast transport to medical facilities.
Safety of young sailors
The incident underscores that youth sail training programs combine maritime education with rigorous safety standards. Routine drills and emergency protocols ensure swift and effective responses to any onboard medical incidents.
Director Sebastian Kluska added:
- Each evacuation confirms that our protocols work, and the collaboration of all rescue services in the region remains at the highest level.
