World Cup in Hyères nears finale. Strong Polish presence in medal races

The World Cup in Hyères is reaching its final stages, with Friday marking the conclusion of medal races in the Formula Kite and iQFOiL classes. The remaining classes will settle their podiums on Saturday, and Team Poland remains firmly in contention.

In the Formula Kite class, Iza Satrjan (UKŻ Wiking Toruń) wrapped up the regatta in 8th place after finishing fourth in her quarter-final. A similar result came from Paweł Tarnowski (Sopocki Klub Żeglarski) in the iQFOiL fleet – he also placed 8th overall, exiting the event in the quarter-finals.

The 49er class has delivered a particularly strong showing for Poland. Two Polish teams have qualified for Saturday’s medal race. Jakub Staniul and Filip Sztorch (KS AZS AWFiS Gdańsk) surged up the leaderboard after a stellar day on the water, jumping from 11th to 4th thanks to two third-place finishes. They’ll enter the medal race from that same fourth position.

Also advancing are Łukasz Buksak and Jacek Głogowski (Centrum Żeglarskie Szczecin / Nauticus YC Olsztyn), currently sitting in 7th place. Despite two subpar races, they capped off the day with a commanding win. Meanwhile, Tytus Butowski and Borys Podumis (AWFiS Gdańsk) concluded their regatta in 20th place.

In the 49erFX class, the Polish team Czapska/Rajchert (Spójnia Sailing Section) secured a spot in the medal race, holding 9th place going into the final day.

Agata Barwińska (SSW MOS Iława) continues to show consistency and form in the ILCA 6 class. Currently ranked 5th, the sailor from Iława holds a 15-point lead over the British sailor in 6th, and trails Denmark’s 4th-place competitor by just five points.

Other Polish athletes have wrapped up their participation. In the mixed 470 class, Agnieszka Skrzypulec-Szota and Szymon Wierzbicki (YKP Szczecin / AZS Sailing Team Poznań) finished 17th. In the ILCA 7 class, Michał Krasodomski (AWFiS Gdańsk) placed 36th.

With several medal race berths secured, Team Poland will be looking to end the World Cup in Hyères on a high note. Fingers crossed for strong winds and stronger finishes.
