Szczecin Marks 80 Years - A Celebration of Heritage, Community and Maritime Identity

On Saturday, July 5, the city of Szczecin commemorates the 80th anniversary of its integration into post-war Poland. To mark the occasion, the city has prepared a day filled with cultural, musical and family-oriented events, set in two symbolic locations: the iconic Rose Garden and the historic City Hall square. A Family Picnic in the Rose Garden

Starting at noon, the city’s lush Rose Garden transforms into a vibrant hub of community activity. The program includes creative workshops, family games, local quizzes and eco-friendly art activities – all tailored for intergenerational participation. The birthday celebration officially kicks off at 1:00 PM with the ceremonial cutting of two monumental birthday cakes, each weighing 80 kilograms – a sweet tribute to the city’s anniversary.

Live performances from local artists include the Szczecinianie Song and Dance Ensemble, showcasing traditional attire and the city’s official bugle call, followed by the Good Vibration Quartet delivering cinematic music with a classical string twist. The day concludes with a festive retro-themed open-air dance from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM – inviting all generations to celebrate in rhythm and joy.

Beyond the Last 80 Years – A Port City with Centuries of History

While this year’s anniversary commemorates 80 years of Szczecin’s return to Poland after World War II, the city's history spans more than a millennium. Originating as a Slavic settlement in the 8th century, Szczecin has since served as the capital of the Duchy of Pomerania, a member of the Hanseatic League, and later as part of Prussia and Germany. Its dynamic past has shaped a unique identity – one that bridges Central European traditions with a strong maritime character.

Saturday’s multimedia mapping projection – titled “80 Years of Szczecin” – will offer an artistic and emotional journey through the city’s historical transitions, urban evolution and visions for the future, narrated in light, color and sound. The projection will be displayed on the facade of the City Hall at two showings: 10:30 PM and 11:00 PM.

A Lightshow Telling Szczecin’s Story

The evening mapping event, held at City Hall on Plac Armii Krajowej, will serve as the symbolic highlight of the birthday celebrations. Through cutting-edge 3D visual effects, animation and synchronized audio, the “80 Years of Szczecin” show will transform the building’s architecture into a living canvas – bringing to life the city’s heritage, resilience and ambition.

It is not only a public spectacle, but a cultural statement: that Szczecin is a city aware of its past, proud of its journey, and ready to face new global and regional challenges.

Maritime Identity in a Changing Europe

Szczecin’s birthday comes at a moment of reflection and repositioning. As a major Baltic seaport and logistics hub, the city plays a key role in Poland’s maritime economy and European inland shipping networks. The anniversary events, though primarily cultural, subtly emphasize Szczecin’s status as a strategic node connecting inland Europe to the sea – both economically and symbolically.

City leaders stress that the celebrations are designed not only to entertain, but to strengthen civic identity, foster community spirit, and promote Szczecin as a city where tradition meets innovation. From green initiatives to infrastructure development, Szczecin continues to build a future anchored in its port heritage and global aspirations.
