Rewa strengthens coastal protection as second stage of flood-defence works progresses

The second stage of a key coastal protection project is underway in Rewa, within the Kosakowo municipality, led by the Maritime Office in Gdynia. The works form part of the long-term programme “Shoreline Flood Protection from the Waters of the Gulf of Gdańsk”, focused on safeguarding the Baltic coastline from storm surges and flooding.

New coastal revetment to support future seaside promenade

The current stage includes the construction of a 480-metre coastal revetment that will later be reinforced with a dune system. The previously existing 420-metre section has already been modernised. Beyond its protective function, the new revetment will provide the structural base for an almost half-kilometre seaside promenade, improving public access and enhancing the local tourism infrastructure.

All heavy works are scheduled outside the peak summer season to minimise disruption to visitors.

Expanded flood-defence infrastructure for the Baltic shoreline

As part of the broader investment, flood-response capabilities are being strengthened. In nearby Mechelinki, two specialised containers have been positioned and equipped with:

  • inflatable flood barriers with pumping systems,
  • a floating pump,
  • a lighting mast with generator,
  • a transport trolley for flood-control equipment,
  • sandbags and auxiliary gear.

The containers will store components of the mobile flood-defence system that can be rapidly deployed on the Rewa revetment. These improvements complement earlier works completed in 2023, when wide protective beaches were created in Rewa and Mechelinki to act as natural shock absorbers during storm events.

Construction progress on key shoreline structures

By the end of October, around 50 metres of the new retaining wall had been completed, including gravel-filled mattresses and sections of stone armour. All tubular piles for a future beach access ramp and stairway have also been installed.

Reinforced-concrete works continue toward the cross on the Rewa Spit, and additional retaining-wall segments with integrated mobile-barrier slots will be built in the coming weeks.

Steel structures for the new beach access points are currently being fabricated off-site, with the first installation planned for November. The project remains on schedule, with completion of the second stage expected in February 2026 and finishing works in autumn 2026.

Funding and project framework

The investment is carried out under a contract signed in October 2024, with a value of approximately PLN 7 million. It is co-financed by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management as part of the “Shoreline Flood Protection from the Waters of the Gulf of Gdańsk” programme.
