Gdańsk port’s Basen Górniczy to gain modern port infrastructure

Gdańsk Port is entering a new stage of development. New quays, higher load-bearing capacity, and improved navigational parameters will enhance the operational potential of Poland’s largest seaport. On 20 February 2026, ZMPG S.A. signed a PLN 114.6 million net contract with PORR S.A. for a major investment in the Inner Port.

The reconstruction of the Coal Quay – stage II and the Administrative Quay in Basen Górniczy continues the expansion of the Coal and Ore Quays. The project aims to increase the port’s capacity to handle bulk cargo.

– This is another stage in the systematic modernization of Gdańsk Port infrastructure, enhancing safety and aligning the port with modern market requirements. With this project, we are upgrading and developing the bulk cargo handling hub to meet the growing needs of domestic and international trading partners – said Dorota Pyć, president of the management board of ZMPG S.A.

Project objectives and benefits

The main goal is to increase cargo handling capacity and improve quay technical parameters. Load-bearing capacity will rise from 10–20 kN/m² to 40 kN/m², enabling handling of heavier equipment and storage of larger cargo. Coal Quay will be adapted for modern self-propelled handling machines, such as LHM 550 and Mantsinen 300.

– The investment includes technical deepening of quays to -12 m, improving navigational parameters and enabling safe handling of larger vessels. The infrastructure will accommodate ships with maximum draft of -10.60 m and up to 100,000 DWT. This significantly expands the port’s operational capabilities and strengthens Gdańsk’s position as a modern Baltic transshipment hub – explained Stefan Rudnik, director of investments at ZMPG S.A.

Investment scope

The project includes expansion of Coal Quay over approximately 335 m with technical yard development, and reconstruction of the Administrative Quay over about 121 m with a modern Ro-Ro ramp.

The investment also involves railway infrastructure upgrades (tracks 301, 302, 303, 344) and port road modernization, improving connections to the national transport network. The area will be equipped with 24 lighting masts, two transformer stations, modern electrical and telecommunication networks supporting operational safety and management.

Additionally, a water supply network and stormwater system with pre-treatment will be built, ensuring compliance with environmental standards. The result will be an integrated, modern port infrastructure complex, boosting the operational and technical potential of Gdańsk Port.

Completion of the investment is planned for autumn 2029.
