Rafał Trzaskowski: Port of Gdańsk as the key to Poland's security and economic development

In the face of growing geopolitical and economic challenges, the Baltic Sea is becoming one of Europe's most strategically important regions. A crucial role in this context is played by the Port of Gdańsk—the largest container port in the region—which not only strengthens Poland’s position on the trade map but also contributes to the country’s energy and military security. These key issues were discussed by Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski and Gdańsk Mayor Aleksandra Dulkiewicz during a meeting as part of the ongoing presidential election campaign.

Port of Gdańsk as a pillar of security

- The Port of Gdańsk is vital for Poland’s security and economic growth—it’s crystal clear, said Rafał Trzaskowski, highlighting the increasing role of maritime ports in the country’s defense.

- Our top priority is the security of the Baltic Sea. You have seen all the issues the Russians are trying to cause here. We now have two new NATO countries—Finland and Sweden—and we are all working together to strengthen our defense capabilities and ensure the Baltic remains secure, added the presidential candidate.

The Warsaw mayor also pointed out that Poland’s security is not limited to military aspects alone. The development of energy and economic infrastructure plays a crucial role in this regard.

- The LNG terminal is being expanded—a special vessel and terminal that, starting in 2028, will secure Poland’s energy needs. In addition, offshore wind farms in the Baltic and the construction of a nuclear power plant in Pomerania are also in progress, said Trzaskowski, emphasizing a comprehensive approach to the country’s development strategy.

Gdańsk at the forefront of economic and local government initiatives

Gdańsk Mayor Aleksandra Dulkiewicz focused on the port’s significance for regional economic development.

- The Port of Gdańsk has demonstrated its strategic importance, especially after the escalation of Russian aggression against Ukraine. It’s not just about military transport but also energy security, noted Dulkiewicz.

She also stressed the need for increased local government involvement in port management.

- The City of Gdańsk is a co-owner of the port, a small one, but still a co-owner. I hope that one day, we will see the port municipalized, the Gdańsk mayor said, referring to long-term plans to enhance local authorities' control over key infrastructure.

Investments as the engine of national growth

During the meeting, it was emphasized that the Port of Gdańsk is not only a strategic security asset but also one of the most crucial components of Poland’s maritime economy. As Trzaskowski pointed out, port investments go beyond infrastructure—they serve as a driving force for the entire economy.

- Economic patriotism translates into our security. Pomerania has the potential to become Poland’s economic heart, he stated.

Key projects related to port development include not only the expansion of the LNG terminal and the installation terminal for offshore wind farms but also the modernization of other Polish ports.

- The expansion of ports in Ustka and Darłowo, as well as the waterway through the Vistula Spit leading to Elbląg, are investments that support the entire region’s development, added Trzaskowski.

EU support and the future of Poland’s maritime economy

A crucial element in financing these investments is European Union funding. Trzaskowski expressed satisfaction that the current government successfully secured funds from the National Recovery Plan—something the previous administration failed to achieve.

- All these investments are moving forward, supported by EU funds, he emphasized.

He also highlighted that the development of ports and logistics infrastructure is not just a national priority but should be a strategic objective for all of Europe.

- I’m glad the EU is focusing on the Baltic, that cooperation involves the government, local authorities, and ports, and that this helps the entire region grow dynamically. We must take a comprehensive approach to Poland’s and Europe’s security, Rafał Trzaskowski concluded during the meeting in Gdańsk.

Poland as europe’s maritime hub

Amid global tensions and the challenges of energy transition, the Port of Gdańsk and other Polish ports have the opportunity to play a crucial role in securing the country's economic and energy future. Joint efforts by local governments, the national government, and international partners can position Poland as one of the key players in the Baltic Sea region.

One thing is certain—these investments will impact not only Poland’s economy but also the country’s security and strategic position in Europe. The Port of Gdańsk already serves as the foundation of these efforts, and its future is shaping up to be a pivotal point on both the economic and political map of Europe.
