- The Shipyard Dispatcher is one of the most crucial positions in the shipyard structure. Their work requires immense responsibility, focus, and specialized knowledge of shipyard operations and vessel traffic, says Marcin Ryngwelski, President of PGZ Naval Shipyard.

Who is the Shipyard Dispatcher and what are their responsibilities?

The Shipyard Dispatcher is a key figure responsible for coordinating the movement of vessels within the shipyard. Working in shifts, they provide round-the-clock supervision over the safety and smooth operation of shipyard activities.

- The Shipyard Dispatcher coordinates and oversees the movement of vessels entering and leaving the shipyard and cooperates with Maritime Administration, Management, and Supervisors responsible for ship repairs and construction, emphasizes Marcin Ryngwelski.

Their responsibilities include:

• Monitoring vessel traffic,
• Coordinating with Maritime Administration (e.g., the Maritime Office in Gdynia or Szczecin),
• Collaborating with production and repair department managers,
• Supervising the availability of quays and docks,
• Notifying appropriate services and coordinating emergency actions when needed.

What qualifications are required for the Shipyard Dispatcher position?

To become a Shipyard Dispatcher, a candidate must meet specific requirements:

• A degree in engineering from a maritime university,
• Excellent knowledge of vessel traffic and mooring procedures,
• Proficiency in English,
• In-depth understanding of shipyard operations.

- Former officers or merchant fleet sailors with experience in navigation and maritime logistics often take on this role, adds Marcin Ryngwelski.

An interesting fact is that in one of the newbuild shipyards, the Chief Dispatcher is a Master Mariner who personally navigates each new vessel during sea trials.

Shipyard Dispatcher vs. Railway Traffic Controller

The role of the Shipyard Dispatcher is often compared to that of a Railway Traffic Controller. Both functions are associated with responsibility for safety and smooth traffic flow within a defined area.

- Just as the Railway Traffic Controller manages movement on the station and access tracks, the Shipyard Dispatcher decides on vessel traffic and the availability of quays and docks. Nothing can happen in the shipyard without their knowledge and approval, explains the President of PGZ Naval Shipyard.

A female Shipyard Dispatcher? The future is coming!

Although a woman has yet to hold this position, the future may change that.

- A female Shipyard Dispatcher – that sounds great! Women are more than welcome in this role, and I believe we will soon see the first women taking on this position, says Marcin Ryngwelski enthusiastically.

The role of the Shipyard Dispatcher is critical to the safety and smooth operation of every shipyard facility. They oversee vessel traffic, cooperate with key maritime institutions, and ensure the security of the entire shipyard area.
