Major disruptions in Gdańsk: Siennicki Bridge closed for at least two years
Gdańsk faces significant traffic disruptions as the Siennicki Bridge has been closed to all types of traffic for safety reasons. The closure began on Friday, January 10th, 2025, and is expected to last at least until mid-2027 due to necessary reconstruction efforts. This decision comes after alarming reports from experts regarding the structural integrity of the bridge.

Safety first: Why the bridge Was closed
The Siennicki Bridge, a vital connection for residents of Przeróbka and Stogi, has shown signs of significant structural instability. According to studies conducted by experts from Gdańsk University of Technology, the bridge abutments have shifted at an accelerated rate, posing a risk of collapse.
"Over the past 20 years, the bridge has shifted approximately 4 to 5 cm, but in recent weeks, this movement has accelerated to 0.5 cm within a month. In light of this, we must prioritize the safety of Gdańsk’s residents and completely close the bridge to all types of traffic," stated Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, Mayor of Gdańsk.
The bridge will remain closed until reconstruction is completed. Current plans indicate that the tender for construction will be announced in the first half of 2025, with work expected to finish by mid-2027.
Traffic chaos and detours
The closure of the Siennicki Bridge necessitates a complete reorganization of traffic in the area. Drivers are being redirected via Głęboką, Elbląską, Trasa Sucharskiego, the cable-stayed bridge, and Lenartowicza Street. For port-related transport, the recommended route includes the tunnel under the Martwa Wisła.
"Motorists will need to adjust to the new traffic patterns starting at 10:00 PM. The cable-stayed bridge and the Martwa Wisła Tunnel will be the primary alternatives," added Piotr Borawski, Deputy Mayor for Mobility and Safety.
Changes in public transportation
From 8:00 PM on January 10th, tram traffic between the city center and Stogi was suspended. To mitigate the inconvenience, the city has introduced replacement bus lines, including the T8 line connecting Śródmieście SKM, Przeróbka, and Stogi Beach.
Temporary stops for lines T8, 106, 111, and 138 have been set up at Głęboka 92 and 93, while regular stops at Głęboka 01 and 02 are out of service until further notice.
"We are working to ensure the smooth operation of public transport during this period, including the installation of an overlay turnout to facilitate tram turnarounds," explained Paulina Chełmińska from Gdańsk City Hall.
While the closure of the Siennicki Bridge presents significant challenges, city officials assure residents that all measures are being taken to minimize the impact. Commuters are encouraged to plan their journeys carefully and stay updated on developments.
