Lithuania invests in Baltic Sea safety. Funding agreement signed for new pollution control and SAR vessel
Lithuania is set to significantly boost its maritime capabilities with the signing of a funding agreement for a state-of-the-art multipurpose vessel. The new ship will support search and rescue operations, oil spill response, firefighting, and emergency assistance to other vessels in distress.

The project is being implemented by the Lithuanian Armed Forces in cooperation with the Environmental Project Management Agency (APVA), which oversees the procurement process.
- We are proud to be entrusted with this strategic task of upgrading Lithuania’s marine pollution response system. Our goal is to ensure the procurement process is efficient, transparent, and delivers a vessel that meets modern international standards, said APVA Director Giedrius Dargužas.
Commander of the Lithuanian Navy, Capt. Tadas Jablonskis, emphasized the importance of the project:
- This is a major step in strengthening Lithuania’s naval capabilities and overall maritime safety. The new vessel will allow faster and more effective response to emergencies, save lives, and reduce environmental damage. It is a long-term, sustainable investment in both security and environmental protection.
Currently, pollution response and SAR operations in Lithuanian waters rely on “Šakiai”, a vessel built in 1987. Its limited speed, maneuverability, and outdated equipment no longer meet operational requirements.
Procurement procedures are scheduled to begin by the end of this year, with delivery of the new vessel expected in 2029. The project will be financed with approximately €40 million from European Union funds.
