HMS Halland returns to service after Saab Shipyard upgrade
The submarine HMS Halland was launched at Saab's shipyard in Karlskrona following a comprehensive mid-life upgrade. HMS Halland is the third and final Gotland-class submarine to undergo this advanced modernization process, incorporating new technologies and systems similar to those that will be used in the future Blekinge-class submarines.

The launch of HMS Halland marks a significant step in maintaining and enhancing the operational capabilities of the Swedish Navy. The modernization has provided the submarine with new operational capabilities, allowing it to conduct maritime missions for many years to come, alongside its sister vessels HMS Gotland and HMS Uppland, which have previously undergone similar modifications.
- Securing critical underwater infrastructure and sea lanes is more important than ever. The launch of HMS Halland is a testament to Saab's ability to upgrade and deliver advanced submarines that meet the requirements of the Swedish Navy. With HMS Halland, the Swedish Navy, and by extension NATO, gain additional strength in defending and monitoring the Baltic Sea, said Mats Wicksell, Head of Saab's Business Area Kockums.
Submarines play a vital strategic role in defense and can be deployed across the entire conflict spectrum, from peacekeeping to wartime operations. HMS Halland’s ability to operate covertly with extended endurance makes it a valuable asset in the Baltic Sea, where the layered water structure makes submarine detection particularly challenging.
During the modernization, more than twenty key systems on HMS Halland were replaced, including advanced sensors and command systems. The implemented technological solutions are the same as those planned for the next-generation Blekinge-class (A26) submarines.
