Once completed, REV Ocean will conduct research covering the entire marine ecosystem – from coastal zones to abyssal depths, from polar regions to the tropics. The 194.4 by 22-meter vessel will integrate state-of-the-art marine technology with advanced research capabilities, setting a new standard in the industry.
Onboard laboratories will be equipped with cutting-edge instruments, enabling the preservation, analysis, and storage of samples while at sea. A range of acoustic sensors will allow for seafloor mapping at hadal depths and the study of biological communities in the water column.
The vessel will feature a conference center with meeting rooms, a multifunctional exhibition space, a 35-seat auditorium with Dolby Atmos for lectures, and a professional media editing suite for documentary production.
Additionally, REV Ocean will be equipped with five gantry cranes, pelagic trawling capabilities, and a moonpool – an opening in the hull providing sheltered water access in nearly all weather conditions.
The DSV Aurelia, the world’s deepest-diving three-person acrylic submarine, will also be on board, capable of reaching depths of 2,200 meters. Complementing it will be the ROV Aurora, with its tether management system Borealis and an operational depth of 6,000 meters, granting access to 98% of the ocean.
Exploration, particularly in polar regions, will be further facilitated by an Airbus ACH145 helicopter, which can operate from either of the vessel’s two helidecks. The helicopter will also be used for crew transport and supply deliveries.
George Gill, project director and owner’s representative for REV Ocean, commented: "With the imminent delivery of the 884-REV Ocean from the newbuild yard, we are entering the next phase of our journey. The owner and their team are delighted to collaborate with Damen Shiprepair at their impressive facility in Vlissingen."
This agreement marks the largest contract in DSV’s history, reinforcing the company’s position as a key player in the maritime industry.
- On behalf of the entire team, we are proud and grateful that Rossilini’s Four-10 has entrusted us with this groundbreaking project. We look forward to undertaking the largest contract in our history and bringing it to a successful conclusion in the months ahead, said Michiel de Vliegher, managing director of DSV.
