Boskalis reinforces the coastline of Ameland

Commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat, Boskalis has been carrying out large-scale beach and foreshore replenishment works on the Dutch island of Ameland, part of the West Frisian Islands in the Wadden Sea. The project is aimed at strengthening the island’s natural coastal defense system against the forces of the North Sea.

On the western side of Ameland, approximately 2.5 million cubic meters of sand have been deposited, while on the eastern side foreshore works are ongoing. Earlier this spring, the trailing suction hopper dredger Freeway commenced operations by dredging the access channel around the island. This initial step was crucial, as it created sufficient depth for the heavily loaded Causeway and Freeway to safely reach the project site and deliver sand to the beach.

The extracted sand was transported from the North Sea through the newly deepened channel and discharged to shore via a combination of floating, sinker and land pipelines. On land, dry earthmoving equipment was deployed to evenly distribute the material across the beach. Subsequently, the third sister vessel Strandway joined the project to further support dredging operations on the eastern side of the island.

This operation once again underlines Boskalis’ capability to deploy its extensive dredging fleet and dry earthmoving equipment to protect and reinforce the North Sea and Wadden Sea coasts. The Ameland project demonstrates how the company provides vital coastal defense solutions for areas exposed to erosion and rising sea levels.
