Ambassador of Angola visits Gdynia Maritime University
Gdynia Maritime University hosted Manuel Pedro Chaves, Ambassador of the Republic of Angola to Poland, for high-level talks focused on expanding academic and maritime cooperation. During the meeting with the University’s authorities, led by Rector Prof. Adam Weintrit, discussions centered on joint educational initiatives, exchange of academic staff, and opportunities for collaborative research with Angolan institutions, including the University in Namibe.

University Vice-Rectors, Deans of all faculties, and representatives of the Maritime Training and Shipowners’ Department took part in the talks. Key topics included the organization of STCW-compliant maritime training, as well as the continuation of UMG’s long-standing support for the development of maritime education in Angola. The University highlighted its earlier contributions to the establishment of the former Academy in Namibe, including program development, academic planning, and laboratory design.
Ambassador Chaves was also introduced to the University’s scientific and educational infrastructure through visits to faculty laboratories, simulation facilities and the research vessel Horyzont II. The delegation was presented with the University’s extensive national and international partnerships, including its active role in the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU).
Both parties expressed strong interest in continuing negotiations in the coming months to define detailed frameworks for maritime education cooperation, with particular emphasis on training Angolan students and cadets at Gdynia Maritime University.
