Three Anniversaries, One Port: Świnoujście Celebrates Maritime Legacy and Naval Strength

In the final weekend of June, Świnoujście became the symbolic capital of the Polish coast. This year's Sea Days celebration was uniquely combined with the 260th anniversary of the town's municipal charter and the 60th anniversary of the 8th Coastal Defence Flotilla (8 FOW) — a milestone event for both the maritime and defense sectors.

Naval Port Opens Its Gates – Visibility Meets Security

A highlight of the celebrations was the rare public access to Świnoujście’s Naval Port. A temporary floating bridge allowed civilians to visit the usually restricted Zielina Peninsula — the operational heart of Poland’s western naval defense.

Visitors were given guided access to missile boats, support vessels, unmanned reconnaissance systems, and naval medical and rescue demonstrations. Concerts by the Navy Brass Band and cadet drill performances added a ceremonial touch, reinforcing the Navy’s modern and approachable image.

8th Flotilla: Six Decades of Baltic Security

Established in 1965, the 8th Coastal Defence Flotilla remains the cornerstone of Poland’s maritime defense posture in the Baltic Sea. Responsible for securing critical maritime infrastructure and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Danish Straits, 8 FOW is also an integral part of NATO’s northern flank.

260 Years of a City Facing the Sea

The 260th anniversary of Świnoujście’s city rights offered an opportunity to reflect on the town’s evolution as a strategic maritime hub. Over the decades, Świnoujście has become a critical node in Poland’s sea-based economy:

• a cross-Baltic ferry port,
• LNG import terminal,
• offshore wind development base,
• and a naval headquarters of regional significance.

It exemplifies the convergence of national defense, energy security, and maritime commerce in one coastal ecosystem.
