- The early delivery reflects efficient project execution and close cooperation between the shipyard and the Navy. The scope of work included both standard repair activities and upgrades enhancing the vessel’s operational capabilities, said Karol Denc, project manager for the ORP Drużno refit at PGZ Stocznia Wojenna.
ORP Drużno plays a key role in Poland’s mine countermeasures forces. Between 2017 and 2019 the vessel underwent a comprehensive modernisation at Stocznia Remontowa Nauta, which included replacement of the entire propulsion plant with modern MTU main engines and new diesel generators. The ship was subsequently equipped with the Ukwiał and Głuptak remotely operated vehicles, enabling its participation in NATO’s Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group One (SNMCMG-1).
The latest intermediate dock repair focused on restoring and improving the ship’s technical performance. Work included full hull conservation with composite repairs, as well as a thorough overhaul of the propulsion system, covering shaft lines, propellers and bearings, followed by precision shaft alignment. The MTU main engines and auxiliary generator sets underwent scheduled overhauls combined with software updates. The cooling system was upgraded through the installation of additional sea chests.
A significant element of the refit addressed the vessel’s mine countermeasures capability. The ST400A minesweeping system and its control and distribution panels were modified, while a new ammunition handling crane was installed. The ship was also fitted with a dedicated TOCZEK explosive ordnance magazine equipped with a NOVEC fire suppression system. Repairs were carried out on the hull-mounted sonar and deck equipment used during minesweeping operations.
The refit also expanded the ship’s communications and operational systems. ORP Drużno received a workboat for underwater vehicle operations, a maritime VSAT satellite communications terminal and the MILNET-Z/I secure classified information network. Alarm systems and CCTV monitoring were modernised.
In addition, comprehensive refurbishment was carried out in crew accommodation spaces, sanitary facilities, the galley, and the air conditioning and ventilation systems, improving habitability and working conditions on board.
Following completion of the repair programme, ORP Drużno is ready to return to operational service with the 8th Coastal Defence Flotilla, strengthening the Polish Navy’s mine countermeasures capabilities.
