Poland’s Maritime Heritage: from the coast to the Tatra mountains

The Polish Nautological Society (PTN) held its annual meeting at the Maritime Office in Gdynia, marking nearly 460 years of Poland’s maritime administration, which began with the establishment of the Royal Sea Commission by King Sigismund II Augustus in 1568.

The event was hosted by Anna Stelmaszyk-Świerczyńska, director of the Maritime Office in Gdynia, awarded the Golden Cross of Merit by the Piłsudski Association. The meeting featured a ceremonial “launch” of the latest issue of the PTN journal, Nautologia.

Prof. Marek Grzybowski, head of PTN and president of the Baltic Maritime and Space Cluster, was re-elected as chair. He emphasized:

- Poland stretches from the coast to the Tatra Mountains. Access to the sea is a national treasure, and we must protect and develop it with all our efforts.

The Scientific Committee was confirmed as the Society’s key body, responsible for shaping knowledge and guiding future initiatives.

Discussion also focused on the government’s planned investment in a new training sailing ship for the Gdynia Maritime University and an instrumental research vessel for the Maritime University of Szczecin, worth over PLN 1 billion. Some participants stressed the need for broader debate on the rationale and allocation of such significant funds.
