Port of Gdynia Completes Comprehensive Reconstruction of Indian Quay
The Port of Gdynia has reached another milestone in its long-term development strategy with the completion of a major infrastructure project — the comprehensive reconstruction of the Indian Quay. The investment significantly boosts the port's bulk cargo handling capabilities and strengthens operational synergy with the adjacent liquid bulk terminal.

The scope of work included the construction of a new quay structure, dredging to increase depth, modernization of the road-rail network, expansion of grain loading facilities, and the installation of state-of-the-art technical infrastructure.
- We widened the quay by 6 meters and deepened the seabed to 15.5 meters, allowing us to accommodate the largest bulk carriers calling at the Port of Gdynia, said Wojciech Krugły, Deputy Project Director at NDI Group, the project’s general contractor. - The new quay wall was built using anchored steel tubular piles with interlocked sheet piles. We also constructed completely new utility systems — from stormwater and sanitary sewage to water, power, and telecom networks.
Modern Infrastructure for Modern Logistics
In total, 537 linear meters of quay were upgraded. The project involved building a new sheet pile wall with a reinforced concrete platform, performing extensive dredging works, and modernizing existing conveyor trestles. This included an extension of the quay’s under-crane steel structure and relocation of vessel loading stations.
A brand-new road-rail platform was also constructed, featuring 1,615 meters of single-track railway and 16 standard turnouts designed specifically for the demands of port operations. New fenders and mooring bollards were installed along the quay’s new face to enhance mooring safety and vessel protection.
As part of the terminal enhancement, a new receiving hopper was installed to streamline the intake and shipment of bulk grain products.
Coordination Amidst Ongoing Terminal Operations
One of the project’s key challenges was executing construction in close proximity to the fully operational Chane liquid bulk terminal.
- Coordinating construction with ongoing terminal operations was a logistical challenge, Krugły added. - However, through close collaboration with the Port Authority, we successfully minimized disruptions and maintained a safe work environment.
Notably, part of the work also involved modernization within the zone of a historic grain elevator built in the 1930s — preserving heritage while enabling modern functionality.
Strategic Investment for the Future
The project was commissioned by the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A., with engineering documentation provided by AQUAPROJEKT. It was completed over a 22-month period, with a total investment value of PLN 161 million (approx. EUR 36 million), co-financed by the European Union.
This is yet another successful collaboration between NDI Group and the Port of Gdynia — reinforcing the port’s position as a forward-looking logistics hub, ready to meet the demands of 21st-century maritime trade.
