Polish Sailing League kicks off its 11th season in Sopot

The 11th edition of the Polish Sailing League’s Ekstraklasa is set to launch this Friday, May 16–18, with the opening regatta taking place on the waters off Sopot. Defending champions Yacht Club Sopot will host the event, led by National Team sailor Tytus Butowski at the helm.

The 2025 season will follow a familiar four-stage format, with regattas scheduled in Sopot, Gdynia, Puck, and culminating in the grand final in Szczecin. Last year’s finale in Szczecin kept fans on edge until the final race, where Yacht Club Sopot narrowly edged out Nowy Sztynort Osada Wolności Energa Giżycka Grupa Regatowa to claim their third national title. This triumph marked YCS as one of the most successful clubs in league history, equaling the championship record of Yacht Klub Polski Gdynia.

Fierce competition ahead

This season, the competition promises to be even more intense. Olympic silver medalist Agnieszka Skrzypulec (Tokyo 2020, 470 class) will represent YKP Szczecin, while Yacht Club Gdańsk will be led by Ewa Lewandowska, 2024 Youth Sailor of the Year and current member of the Polish Sailing Federation's National Team.

Other top contenders include last year’s silver medallists Nowy Sztynort, SEJK Pogoń Szczecin with seasoned skipper Tadeusz Kubiak, and the promising young crew of HRM Racing Yacht Club. Making a strong return to the top league is Sztorm Grupa, freshly promoted after a season in the First Division, along with Onboard Sailing (led by Szymon Jabłkowski), KS ISKRA AMW Gdynia, and KS MKS "Marina" Niesulice.

One week after the Ekstraklasa’s first round, the First Division will also begin its 2025 campaign in Sopot.

Regional sailing leagues under way

Meanwhile, three of the five Regional Sailing Leagues have already begun their seasons. The Trójmiejska Liga Żeglarska launched in Sopot with a full lineup of 18 teams. In Poznań, the Wielkopolska League’s Division A set sail on Lake Kierskie, and the Masurian League commenced its 2025 season in Sztynort.

The Polish Sailing League's structure, with its regional, national, and women's competitions, continues to serve as the foundation for developing talent and expanding competitive sailing across the country.
