Poland to hold first-ever naval parade as part of Armed Forces Day celebrations
For the first time in its modern history, Poland will include a full-scale naval parade as part of its national Armed Forces Day celebrations on 15 August 2025. The maritime component, organised by the Polish Ministry of National Defence, will take place in the coastal waters off the Hel Peninsula and marks a significant development in the public recognition of the Polish Navy’s operational role.

The parade is being held under the theme “Dziękujemy za Waszą służbę” (“We thank you for your service”) and coincides with the 105th anniversary of the Battle of Warsaw, a defining moment in Poland’s 20th-century military history. While the traditional land parade on Warsaw’s Wisłostrada Avenue remains the central feature, the addition of a dedicated Baltic Sea naval component represents a notable expansion of the national commemorative framework.
Strategic and historical context
This is the first naval parade in the history of Poland’s Armed Forces Day celebrations. Never before has the maritime domain been formally included as a platform for national-level military ceremony. In 2025, for the first time, the Baltic Sea joins the capital city as a symbolic and operational stage of state-level military commemoration.
From a defence perspective, this shift reflects Poland’s evolving focus on maritime deterrence and the growing strategic importance of the northern theatre within NATO’s eastern flank. The Polish Navy, Naval Aviation Brigade, special forces (JW Formoza), and maritime law enforcement will jointly demonstrate a comprehensive, multidomain presence.
Parade structure and composition
The parade off the Hel Peninsula will begin at approximately 12:00 local time on 15 August. It will include:
- Over 20 naval vessels, including missile frigates, mine countermeasure vessels, and support ships
- Rotary- and fixed-wing assets from the Naval Aviation Brigade
- Special operations forces from JW Formoza
- Patrol and security support from the Maritime Border Guard, Military Police, and local police units
Vessels will form a ceremonial alignment visible from the shore. Crews will be positioned in side-deck parade formation (parada burtowa) in dress uniforms. Naval aircraft will conduct coordinated overflights, and trailing vessels are scheduled to release red and white smoke representing Poland’s national colours.
Rehearsal phase
A full operational rehearsal is scheduled for 7 August, between 12:00 and 14:00, during which participating ships will execute a manoeuvre in the shape of an anchor formation. This visual display will be observable from Hel’s beachfront and breakwater promenade. The main pass-by will last approximately 18 minutes.
Following their departure from the Gdynia naval base in early August, all participating vessels will remain at sea until the day of the official parade.
Military zone and public engagement
A special public zone will be opened on Bulwary Nadmorskie near Hel City Hall on 15 August. Activities will include:
- A large-screen broadcast of the Warsaw and Hel parades
- A static exhibition of modern military and naval equipment
- Interactive displays and briefings with service personnel
- Performances by military bands and cultural units
- Complimentary field kitchen service (traditional pea soup, grochówka)
The zone is open-access and designed to support civil–military engagement.
Naval significance and implications
This event signals a doctrinal and symbolic shift in how the Polish Armed Forces represent and integrate their maritime component. While the Army and Air Force have traditionally dominated national military observances, the inclusion of the Navy in a front-facing ceremonial capacity reflects its growing operational relevance, particularly in a changing Baltic security environment.
Hel, which played a key role in the 1939 campaign as one of the last areas of organised Polish defence, now hosts the country’s first official maritime military parade—marking a continuity between historical memory and modern naval posture.
