PGE and Ørsted*Enprom for commissioning of Baltica 2 onshore substation

PGE and Ørsted, joint developers of the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm, have selected Polish company Enprom to carry out commissioning works for the project’s onshore transformer substation. The facility is being built in Osieki Lęborskie, in the Choczewo municipality in northern Poland.

According to Bartosz Fedurek, President of the Management Board of PGE Baltica, the contract marks another milestone in the advancement of the project.

- The selection and signing of the contract with the contractor responsible for the commissioning of the Baltica 2 onshore substation confirms how advanced the project already is. Electrical commissioning of the onshore grid connection infrastructure, followed by its continuous operation, will directly translate into the proper operation of offshore turbines and uninterrupted electricity generation. We are particularly pleased that the commissioning works will be carried out by a Polish company—one of the largest and most experienced power engineering contractors in Poland, well acquainted with the specifics of offshore investments. This represents another step towards increasing the share of domestic content in the project, said Bartosz Fedurek.

Ørsted also emphasized the strategic importance of the onshore substation for the entire electrical system of Baltica 2.

- I am pleased to see more and more Polish companies joining the offshore wind supply chain. The agreement with Enprom demonstrates that the market has local capabilities essential for the development of the offshore wind sector. This is a crucial area—through the onshore substation we monitor and control the entire electrical infrastructure, including offshore substations and wind turbines located approximately 40 km from shore, said Ulrik Lange, Vice President and Managing Director of the Baltica 2 project at Ørsted.

Under the contract, Enprom will perform full power export commissioning, including compliance tests and tests required by the Polish transmission system operator, Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE). The scope also includes design verification tests, trial operation and handover of the substation for commercial use. The planned execution period is 21 months.

The contractor will inspect all major components related to power transmission and distribution, as well as auxiliary systems ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the facility.

- This project allows us to combine our substation expertise with extensive offshore experience. With the Baltica 2 contract, Enprom will be involved as a contractor in all four offshore wind farms currently under construction in the Polish Baltic Sea, noted Piotr Tomczyk, member of the Enprom Management Board.

The Baltica 2 onshore substation will occupy nearly 13 hectares. Electricity generated offshore will be transmitted to shore at 275 kV, then carried via a 6-kilometre land cable route to the substation, where the voltage will be stepped up to 400 kV and fed into the national grid through the nearby PSE Choczewo substation.

Works are also underway on an HDD drilling near the coastline, enabling the connection of offshore and onshore cables while significantly reducing environmental impact. The commissioning of the onshore substation will not affect the operation of local low- and medium-voltage distribution networks.

With a planned capacity of up to 1.5 GW, Baltica 2 is a joint investment by PGE and Ørsted. Once commissioned in 2027, it will become the largest offshore wind farm in Poland, capable of supplying green energy to approximately 2.5 million households.
