Orcas increasingly target yachts off Portugal. A growing challenge for recreational navigation
This past Saturday, another series of incidents involving orcas was reported off the Lisbon metropolitan coast. According to the Portuguese National Maritime Authority (AMN), two sailing yachts were attacked by a pod of orcas – one of them eventually sank near the resort of Cascais. All four crew members were rescued by a nearby vessel.

Eyewitnesses stated that the animals repeatedly rammed the hull and rudder blade for nearly an hour, ultimately destroying the steering system. The same group then moved south towards Fonte da Talha, where it damaged the rudder of another Portuguese yacht in a similar manner. The five crew members on board were unharmed, but the vessel was left disabled.
AMN has documented dozens of comparable incidents in recent months along the Portuguese coast, most of them involving recreational yachts.
The scientific community remains divided on the root causes of this behavior. Some marine biologists believe it may be a form of play or social learning among young orcas, while others argue it could be a reaction to prior injuries or disturbances in their natural habitat. There are also theories linking the rising frequency of these events to climate change and shifting fish migration routes – a critical food source for orcas.
For the recreational boating sector, this trend represents an escalating safety concern in the North Atlantic, particularly around the Iberian Peninsula. Calls are growing for the development of standardized safety protocols for sport and leisure vessels, including clear guidelines on how to react when encountering orcas.
What was once regarded as a rare curiosity is now evolving into an industry-wide issue, requiring coordinated efforts between maritime authorities, yacht operators, and the scientific community.
