The duty crew of the Vessel Base in Stara Pasłęka received a report about fishermen planning to operate on the frozen waters of the Vistula Lagoon, setting up an under-ice fishing gear. In winter conditions, when traditional fishing is impossible due to weather, this activity is often the only source of livelihood for local fishermen.

Border Guard officers, who constantly monitor the maritime border area, noticed that the fishermen were approaching the Polish-Russian border. The commander of the duty hovercraft SG-413 made the decision to intervene proactively and proceeded to the area near border beacon No. 11. There, four fishermen were found deploying their under-ice fishing gear.

- These fishermen are well known to our officers, and previous contacts have ensured they understand the rules. The inspection and identity checks were conducted smoothly, said the Maritime Branch of the Polish Border Guard. The fishermen’s data were verified in official systems, and no irregularities were found.

It was determined that the fishermen had misjudged the exact border line and were too close to it, which could have led to an unintentional border crossing. The situation was also observed by the Russian Border Service, which did not intervene, as no border violation occurred.

The Border Guard instructed the fishermen to move their fishing gear 200 meters westward and reminded them of safety guidelines when working on ice, taking into account weather changes and ice thickness. After completing their work, the fishermen returned safely to shore, and the officers resumed their regular duties.

The Polish Maritime Border Guard emphasizes that proactive measures in border areas are crucial for both the safety of fishermen and the protection of national borders.
