Nova Marina Gdynia – A New Era for Polish Sailing
A transformative chapter is unfolding for Gdynia’s sailing community with the launch of the Nova Marina Gdynia project. Spearheaded by the Polish Sailing Association (PZŻ) in partnership with Ghelamco, this development is set to be operational by 2027, aligning with the Olympic qualification events that will draw sailors from across the globe. Located on Gdynia’s South Pier, between Jana Pawła II Avenue and Beniowskiego Quay, Nova Marina will replace outdated hangars with a state-of-the-art sports and commercial complex, cementing Gdynia’s status as Poland’s sailing hub.
Modernist design meets nautical heritage
Initiated by PZŻ in 2021, the project features five five-story buildings designed by PIG Architekci. The architectural vision draws heavily on modernist principles, as highlighted by the design team. Offering panoramic views of the yacht marina and port, the ground floors will house advanced storage facilities for local sailing clubs, including Yacht Klub Polski Gdynia and Jacht Klub Morski Gryf. This is a new base for operations, with PZŻ dubbing it the new home of Polish sailing.
Revitalizing South Pier
The development will rejuvenate the South Pier, addressing long-standing local calls for improvement. The area’s temporary structures have long been seen as substandard, notes Gdynia’s mayor, Aleksandra Kosiorek. By integrating high-quality commercial functions, Nova Marina will provide sailors with top-tier infrastructure, fostering the sport’s growth across all levels—from youth training to seasoned enthusiasts.
Construction underway, clubs relocate temporarily
Work has begun, with the demolition of decades-old pavilions starting in early April. Sailing clubs are transitioning to a temporary site provided by the city at the Marina Gdynia boatyard office. We’ve secured an agreement with PZŻ to ensure continuity of youth training until 2027, explains Mariusz Bzdęga, Gdynia’s director of culture and community activities. Ghelamco is currently finalizing the selection of the main contractor.
Gdynia bolsters its maritime leadership
Nova Marina is part of a broader strategy to elevate Gdynia’s sailing profile ahead of the 2027 World Sailing Championships. Upcoming projects include a new boatyard facility in the General Zaruski Basin and the Water Hall complex with an adjacent park. With the existing Marina Yacht Park already offering 150 berths, these initiatives underscore Gdynia’s commitment to blending maritime tradition with modern innovation, driving growth in the region’s nautical sector.
