Northern Challenge 2025. Polish navy mine divers in Iceland

The multinational exercise Northern Challenge 2025 has concluded in Iceland, bringing together 380 experts from 18 nations to enhance interoperability and share expertise in countering improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The event, hosted annually by the Icelandic Coast Guard, is one of the key training opportunities worldwide for Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units.

Poland was represented by Navy Mine Divers from the 12th and 13th Minesweeper Squadrons of the 8th Coastal Defense Flotilla, reaffirming the vital role of Polish EOD specialists in maritime security and allied cooperation.

Realistic scenarios in demanding conditions

The exercise was conducted in both maritime and land environments, under the demanding and ever-changing Icelandic weather. For maximum realism, teams worked with live explosives to simulate battlefield conditions.

Each day, the Polish teams completed at least two missions. These included neutralizing IED threats to ships, port infrastructure, and personnel, as well as countering remotely controlled explosive-laden boats. Another critical aspect was the collection and preservation of forensic evidence for further laboratory analysis – a task essential not only for eliminating immediate threats but also for understanding adversary tactics.

New technologies, new challenges

A new feature of Northern Challenge 2025 was the introduction of UUVs (Unmanned Underwater Vehicles) and UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) into exercise scenarios. Such systems are increasingly common in modern conflicts, posing evolving challenges for both EOD operators and naval forces.

Strengthening cooperation and expertise

Beyond the technical drills, the exercise served as a platform for international cooperation.

– The opportunity to work with live explosives and to exchange knowledge with partners from other nations was invaluable. Exercises like Northern Challenge directly enhance the effectiveness and safety of operational missions, noted one of the participating Polish Navy divers.

Participation in Northern Challenge is crucial for strengthening the capabilities of Poland’s Mine Diver Groups. It allows them to refine procedures, adopt emerging technologies, and build stronger ties with NATO allies. Ultimately, these efforts enhance the protection of maritime routes, ports, and critical infrastructure, directly contributing to the safety of both personnel and civilians.
