Collision Between a Tanker and a Container Ship
On Monday, just before 11 AM (CET), the tanker MV Stena Immaculate collided with the container ship Solong off the coast of Hull, approximately 250 km north of London. According to British media, both vessels suffered significant damage, with fires breaking out on board.
Emergency services, including coast guard helicopters, fire-fighting vessels, and rescue boats, were immediately dispatched to the scene. 37 crew members were evacuated, while one person is still missing. British MP Graham Stuartreported that one crew member was injured and taken to the hospital.
Jet Fuel Spill Into the North Sea
According to BBC, the MV Stena Immaculate was carrying jet fuel owned by the U.S. government. The collision caused a breach in the fuel tanks, resulting in a fuel spill into the North Sea. The vessel’s operator, Crowley, a U.S. logistics company, confirmed that multiple explosions occurred on board, forcing the crew to abandon the ship.
Experts fear serious environmental consequences, but the extent of the damage remains uncertain. Greenpeace UKexpressed concerns about the high speed at which the collision occurred and the footage showing significant structural damage to the tanker.
Investigation Into the Incident
The cause of the collision is still under investigation, with authorities collecting evidence and interviewing crew members. The Solong was en route from Scotland to Rotterdam, while the MV Stena Immaculate was transporting jet fuel as part of a U.S. military supply program.
The incident has raised concerns among British authorities, particularly regarding potential environmental damage and maritime safety in the region.
