Spain builds a naval combat cloud. Navantia leading the new era of maritime systems

Navantia’s Naval Systems Centre of Excellence hosted the first national conference on the naval combat cloud, bringing together representatives of the Spanish Navy, industry, academia, and research centers. The event aimed to strengthen collaboration in developing next-generation systems to address current and future operational challenges of the Spanish Armed Forces.

A new era in maritime combat systems

The concept of the naval combat cloud represents a strategic transformation for the Spanish Navy, redefining how forces detect, assess, decide, and act in the maritime domain. This new operational environment will serve as the foundation for the next generation of the SCOMBA combat system, developed by Navantia and already proven across the Spanish fleet for its robust and interoperable capabilities.

Beyond technology – a paradigm shift

Speakers underlined that the naval combat cloud is not merely a technological project but a paradigm shift in naval operations. The discussions involved the Spanish Defence Staff, Navy leadership, and key industrial and academic stakeholders.

Key topics included future operational capabilities, next-generation communication systems, artificial intelligence, unmanned vehicles, and cybersecurity, highlighting the growing need for technological sovereignty and resilient, interoperable solutions for national defense.

A milestone towards a sovereign naval cloud

The conference marked a significant milestone towards achieving a sovereign, interoperable, and resilient naval combat cloud, reinforcing Navantia’s role as a technological leader in maritime defense innovation.

Navantia and Poland’s Orka program

Navantia is also one of the contenders in Poland’s Orka submarine program, offering its S-80 Plus submarine. This advanced platform features an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system and an integrated combat management system based on SCOMBA – the same technological foundation driving Navantia’s naval combat cloud initiative.
