Navantia's second S-80 submarine begins testing and achieves key safety milestones
The Spanish shipbuilding company Navantia is successfully progressing with the construction of modern S-80 class submarines for the Spanish Navy. The second unit in the series of four, the S-82 "Narciso Monturiol," has reached its first key safety milestones and entered the phase of harbor testing.

A key step: "power up" of onboard systems
One of the most critical stages in the vessel’s testing was the "power up" procedure, which involved activating the main and emergency power distribution networks. The success of this process enables the safe operation of other onboard systems via distribution panels, ensuring full functionality during further testing and integration.
This procedure marks the first milestone within the safety milestones management plan for the S-80 program. The plan aims to establish a framework that ensures the construction and testing of these submarines are carried out with the highest level of safety while minimizing operational risks.
More than 1,500 harbor tests
Alongside achieving this milestone, the first harbor acceptance tests (HAT) have commenced, encompassing over 1,500 verification procedures. These include both acceptance and builder’s trials, ensuring that the vessel meets all technical requirements.
The S-80 program is progressing according to schedule, as evidenced by the success of the first unit, which is already in service with the Spanish Navy. The S-82 "Narciso Monturiol" will undergo further tests before its planned launch in the coming summer months.
Cutting-edge technologies in conventional submarines
The S-80 class submarines are state-of-the-art vessels measuring 80.8 meters in length with a diameter of 7.3 meters and a submerged displacement of approximately 3,000 tons. They are equipped with advanced technologies, including a combat and platform control system developed by Navantia Sistemas and an innovative anaerobic propulsion system known as BEST-AIP.
The BEST-AIP system is a groundbreaking propulsion solution based on fuel cells, incorporating aerospace technology. It allows submarines to generate electrical power at any depth without surfacing for weeks, significantly enhancing their ability to conduct high-discretion missions.
International interest in the S-80 program
Thanks to its cutting-edge technological advancements, the S-80 class is considered one of the most advanced conventional submarine designs globally. It has attracted significant interest from international markets, with potential buyers including the navies of Poland and Canada. The S-80 program thus opens export opportunities for the Spanish shipbuilding industry, strengthening Navantia’s position in the global market for advanced naval technologies.
S-80 and Poland’s Orka program
One of the countries showing interest in the S-80 class is Poland, which is currently pursuing the Orka program—a project aimed at acquiring new submarines for the Polish Navy. Poland seeks modern submarines with a high degree of autonomy and the capability for extended underwater operations. With its unique BEST-AIP technology and advanced combat management systems, the S-80 meets the Polish Armed Forces' requirements.
A potential partnership between Poland and Navantia under the Orka program could unlock new technological and industrial opportunities for both nations, strengthening European collaboration in the defense sector.
