The Panama Canal back under U.S. control?
One of the key points of the speech was the announcement of “taking back” the Panama Canal, which Trump claimed was unjustly handed over to Panama. The president emphasized that current transit fees are too high for American ships and that China’s control over the strategic transport route poses a significant threat. Trump called the decision to transfer the canal a “foolish gift” and pledged to restore full U.S. control over this critical area.
The Gulf of Mexico to become the American Gulf?
In an equally symbolic move, Donald Trump announced plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the American Gulf.
- Our success will be measured by the wars we end; I will be remembered as the bringer of peace - the president said, highlighting his focus on strengthening American identity and independence.
Mars on the horizon: USA as the leader in technology and innovation
Ambitious space plans include sending astronauts to Mars, where they would plant the American flag. Trump described this as “fulfilling America’s destiny among the stars.” Space exploration is set to become one of the cornerstones of his presidency, reinforcing the U.S. position as a leader in technology and innovation.
State of emergency at the border and in energy
Trump also announced a state of emergency at the southern border due to the issue of illegal immigration. Plans include deploying the military, continuing construction of the border wall, and designating drug cartels as terrorist organizations. The president also declared a state of emergency in energy policy, aiming to roll back climate regulations, increase oil and gas production, and revoke zero-emission vehicle standards.
Foreign trade and tariffs
The president pledged to “rebuild the trade system” by imposing tariffs and creating a new agency—the External Revenue Service—to oversee their collection. However, the details of these changes remain unclear.
