Bytomskie Quay expansion completed ahead of schedule, strengthening Port of Gdańsk’s inner harbour
On 12 December 2025, the Port of Gdańsk officially marked the completion of the Bytomskie Quay expansion project, a key infrastructure upgrade within the Inner Harbour. The investment was co-financed by the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF2) and delivered nearly three months ahead of the contractual deadline.

The project, titled “Improvement of Port of Gdańsk infrastructure together with an analysis of the implementation of a low-emission OPS system for the sustainable development of the TEN-T network”, was executed by PORR S.A. under a contract signed in March 2024. The total value of the investment amounted to approximately PLN 43 million.
During the inauguration ceremony, Jacek Karnowski, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Funds and Regional Policy, highlighted the strong performance of Polish seaports in securing CEF funding. Over the past decade, the Port of Gdańsk alone has attracted more than PLN 2 billion in public financing, including around PLN 1 billion from the CEF instrument.
Substantial increase in operational capacity
The modernisation has significantly enhanced the operational parameters of Bytomskie Quay. Prior to reconstruction, the berth offered a depth of around 6 metres, allowing vessels up to 116 metres in length and approximately 7,000 DWT. Following the upgrade, the depth has increased to 10.2 metres, enabling the handling of vessels up to 142 metres long, 25 metres wide and with several times greater deadweight capacity.
According to Dorota Pyć, President of the Port of Gdańsk Authority, the project has a systemic impact: although limited to a single quay, it improves the throughput, flexibility and long-term development potential of the entire Inner Harbour.
The quay has now become a fully multifunctional cargo facility, opening new opportunities for terminal operators and logistics chains. An extended mooring line, robust structure and modern technical infrastructure considerably raise the port’s operational standard.
Modern engineering and strong safety performance
The scope of works included the construction of a 204-metre quay section in slab-type design with a front sheet-pile wall and a slab supported by a CFA pile grid. The permissible working load in the technical zone reaches 30 kN/m². Dredging works, new utility networks and a modern lighting system mounted on four 36-metre masts were also completed.
PORR S.A. CEO Piotr Kledzik emphasised that the project was delivered without any safety incidents, underscoring the high safety standards of Polish marine construction.
Next step: selecting the operator
With construction works completed, the Port of Gdańsk is moving forward with plans to commercialise adjacent port areas. A tender is currently under way for the lease of a developed property covering more than 5 hectares at Ku Ujściu Street, offering direct access to the new quay. The deadline for bids is 22 January 2026.
The Bytomskie Quay expansion represents not only an infrastructure upgrade, but also a strategic investment in the future of Poland’s maritime economy, supporting trade growth, logistics efficiency and national energy security.
