Brzeźno Pier after modernization. Enhancing safety, durability and user comfort

The Brzeźno Pier has resumed its role as a key recreational and coastal infrastructure asset in Gdańsk following a comprehensive modernization project. The completed works reflect a long-term approach to maintaining hydrotechnical structures exposed to the harsh marine environment, with a strong focus on safety, structural durability and user comfort.

The scope of the project included extensive reinforcement of the pier’s load-bearing structure. Steel piles were cleaned and protected against further corrosion, while structural frames were strengthened to improve resistance to wave action, salinity and variable weather conditions. A major component of the upgrade was the complete replacement of the wooden deck system, with new planks and beams installed to enhance both aesthetics and pedestrian safety.

Particular attention was given to steel elements located beneath the wooden superstructure. After removing corrosion, specialized anti-corrosion protection systems were applied, significantly extending the service life of the structure. Handrails were refurbished and a new navigation light was installed, improving visibility and safety in the nearshore zone.

The modernization also addressed user-oriented facilities. New steel railings, waste bins, water exit ladders and lifeguard equipment stands were installed. Gratings on the lower deck were replaced, and the power supply system was upgraded, ensuring greater reliability of the pier’s technical infrastructure. User comfort was further enhanced by the installation of additional benches, doubling their previous number and encouraging longer recreational use with views of the sea.

The investment was fully financed by local government funds and supervised by a dedicated municipal authority. The works were carried out by an experienced contractor specializing in hydrotechnical projects, ensuring high-quality execution and compliance with marine engineering standards.

The Brzeźno Pier modernization aligns with broader efforts to revitalize coastal infrastructure, which must meet increasing public expectations while adapting to demanding environmental conditions. Such projects play a crucial role in the sustainable development of coastal areas, combining recreational, tourism and technical functions.
