Zr.Ms. Pelikaan departs for Jamaica with hurricane relief supplies

The Royal Netherlands Navy has deployed the logistics support vessel Zr.Ms. Pelikaan from its base in Curaçao to deliver humanitarian aid to Jamaica following the impact of Hurricane Melissa. The vessel is carrying essential relief supplies, including food, medical provisions, and temporary shelters.

Before reaching Jamaica, Pelikaan is scheduled to make a stop in Barbados to replenish additional supplies. The mission is coordinated with local authorities and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) to ensure rapid and effective delivery of humanitarian assistance.

Zr.Ms. Pelikaan has a long-standing role in Caribbean operations. The vessel was active in Haiti in 2010 following the earthquake in Port-au-Prince and in 2016 during Hurricane Matthew relief efforts.

The Dutch Navy operates alongside other regional and international partners in humanitarian missions. In the past, similar operations have involved the Royal Navy and the U.S. Navy, coordinated through initiatives such as the Multinational Caribbean Coordination Cell (MNCCC).

This deployment highlights the strategic importance of logistics support vessels in rapid response to natural disasters, providing both immediate humanitarian aid and reinforcing the capability of naval forces to operate in crisis-affected regions.
