Third time’s the charm? Russia tests NATO’s patience over the Baltic. Il-20 intercepted by Polish MiG-29s
Poland’s Operational Command of the Armed Forces has confirmed the third interception of a Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea this week, underscoring a rising tempo of Russian military activity in the region. The latest incident once again highlights Moscow’s ongoing efforts to probe NATO’s air defenses along the Alliance’s eastern flank.

On October 31, shortly before 9:00 a.m., a pair of Polish Air Force MiG-29 fighter jets were scrambled to intercept a Russian Il-20 Coot electronic intelligence aircraft flying over international waters of the Baltic Sea.
According to the official statement, the Russian aircraft was operating without a filed flight plan and with its transponder switched off, creating a potential risk to both civilian and military air traffic in the area. The Polish pilots intercepted, identified, and escorted the aircraft in full accordance with NATO’s Air Policing procedures.
The Il-20 did not violate Polish airspace, but the frequency of such encounters — three within a single week — reflects an escalating pattern of Russian reconnaissance and intimidation flights near NATO borders.
Poland’s Air Force remains on continuous alert as part of the NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence System (NATINAMDS), responding rapidly to any potential threat in coordination with allied command structures.
- The Polish Armed Forces remain in full combat readiness and effectively respond to any provocative actions by the Russian Federation, working closely with our NATO allies, the Operational Command emphasized in its statement.
The Il-20, a Cold War–era intelligence-gathering aircraft, continues to be used by Russia for signals collection and surveillance missions over the Baltic and Black Sea regions. Its recent activity is widely seen by defense analysts as a deliberate test of NATO’s response times and operational discipline.
The latest successful interception by the Polish MiG-29 detachment once again demonstrates the professionalism, vigilance, and high level of training of Polish pilots safeguarding the airspace of the Republic of Poland and NATO’s northeastern frontier.
