EUNAVFOR ASPIDES: Strengthening Regional Stability
EUNAVFOR ASPIDES is a defensive operation initiated by the European Union aimed at restoring and maintaining freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. This operation represents a swift response to the need for enhanced maritime security in these strategically significant regions. Its primary objective is to protect commercial interests and ensure maritime security for the benefit of both the EU and the broader international community.
Josep Borrell, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, emphasized that EUNAVFOR ASPIDES will ensure maritime presence in areas where, since October 2023, Houthi forces have been attacking merchant vessels. Conducted in cooperation with international partners, the operation will help guarantee maritime security and freedom of navigation, particularly for commercial shipping.
EUNAVFOR ASPIDES constitutes a rapid reaction by the European Union to restore security and freedom of navigation within a maritime corridor of great strategic importance. The operation will significantly contribute to protecting commercial interests and enhancing security, benefiting both the EU and the wider international community.
