Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 Enhances and Benefits from Ramstein Flag Integration
NORTH SEA - Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1) played a complementary and dynamic role in the multinational Ramstein Flag exercise, bringing a critical maritime dimension to NATO’s integrated air and missile defence training. Composed of HNLMS Tromp (Netherlands), BNS Louise-Marie (Belgium), and FGS Rhön (Germany), SNMG1 not only contributed to the realism and complexity of the scenario but also took advantage of valuable high-end training opportunities for its crews and staff.

HNLMS Tromp, an Air Defence and Command Frigate, currently serves as the flagship of SNMG1. Equipped with advanced radar and sensor suites and a dedicated command staff, Tromp provided essential command and control functions to support air operations. The ship’s fighter controllers were integral to the air picture, actively guiding allied aircraft and ensuring seamless coordination between the maritime and air components of the exercise.
- As Ramstein Flag 2025 is mainly conducted over the Northsea, SNMG1 is able to provide a maritime element to this AIRCOM exercise with seabased sensors and weapon systems, said Commodore Arjen S. Warnaar, Commander, Standing NATO Maritime Group One. - This taskgroup provides added realism and complexity for NATO pilots and aircrew and helps them ‘Train as they would fight’/ this multidomain approach makes us Stronger Together.
Ramstein Flag continues to stand as a cornerstone for NATO’s advanced training calendar. For SNMG1, the exercise highlighted the evolving importance of maritime assets in modern joint operations and provided a critical opportunity to train the group’s multinational teams for future deployments and missions across the alliance’s area of responsibility.
