Shell acquires Pavilion Energy - strengthening its LNG market leadership
Shell Eastern Trading Pte. Ltd., a subsidiary of Shell plc, has completed the acquisition of Pavilion Energy Pte. Ltd., reinforcing its position in the global liquefied natural gas (LNG) market. Shell strengthens its global LNG position
Singapore-based Pavilion Energy manages contracted LNG supply volumes of 6.5 million tonnes per annum. This acquisition aligns with Shell’s long-term strategy to grow its LNG sales by 4-5% annually through 2030. The integration of Pavilion Energy’s assets into Shell’s global portfolio will begin immediately.
Through this acquisition, Shell gains access to new regasification capacities, including the Isle of Grain terminal in the United Kingdom (2 million tonnes per annum), as well as regasification infrastructure in Singapore and Spain. Additionally, Shell takes over a fleet consisting of three MEGI (M-type, electronically controlled gas injection) LNG carriers and two TFDE (tri-fuel diesel electric) vessels, enhancing its logistical capabilities.
LNG as the future of energy
Shell remains a pioneer in LNG development as a marine fuel. Singapore, one of the world's largest bunkering hubs, plays a crucial role in promoting LNG as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional marine fuels. Pavilion Energy has been actively involved in LNG bunkering, with its first bunkering vessel deployed in early 2024.
The acquisition does not include Pavilion Energy’s pipeline gas business in Singapore, which has been transferred to Gas Supply Pte Ltd (GSPL), a subsidiary of Temasek. It also excludes Pavilion Energy’s 20% interest in gas blocks 1 and 4 in Tanzania.
LNG in Asia – strategic importance
For years, Shell has played a key role in supplying LNG to Asia. Following its earlier acquisition of BG Group, the company obtained Singapore’s first LNG import license and currently supplies nearly 25% of the country’s natural gas needs. With an extensive supply portfolio, Shell continues to provide reliable LNG deliveries to Singapore and other Asian markets, contributing to the region’s energy security.
Shell’s commitment to sustainability
Shell’s global LNG investments are part of a broader corporate strategy aimed at increasing the share of low-carbon fuels in the global energy mix. The Pavilion Energy acquisition represents a significant step toward a more sustainable energy future.
Through this transaction, Shell not only strengthens its position as a leading LNG supplier but also opens new growth opportunities for the entire natural gas industry. As the demand for cleaner energy sources rises, LNG is set to play a critical role in the transformation of the energy sector.
