Sharpshooters at sea. Mare Balticum Sniper Challenge aboard ORP Gen. Tadeusz Kościuszko
The Baltic Sea once again became the stage for a unique training and competition event – the Mare Balticum Sniper Challenge. Hosted aboard the guided missile frigate ORP Gen. Tadeusz Kościuszko, the second edition of this initiative brought together the top marksmen from the Polish Armed Forces and uniformed services of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration. The program was organized in cooperation with the Polish Navy and the CWS Sports Club in Słupsk.

The objective was clear: to refine the ability to deliver precision fire under maritime conditions – one of the most demanding environments for a sniper. Unlike land-based ranges, shooting from a naval platform requires constant adjustment for ship movement, shifting sea winds, wave impact, humidity, and changing light. It is training that cannot be replicated onshore, making this event a rare opportunity to test skills in authentic conditions.
A notable highlight was the participation of soldiers from the 5th Mazovian Territorial Defence Brigade, marking their first live-fire training on open waters. As the only representatives of the Territorial Defence Force invited to the challenge, their involvement underscores the growing specialization and recognition of this formation within Poland’s defense system.
The challenge was more than just a competition. It provided a forum for knowledge exchange across different military branches and security services, strengthening interoperability and building mutual trust between formations that may one day operate side by side in maritime or littoral operations.
The event culminated in a sniper competition. This year’s top performers were the sharpshooters of the 1st Warsaw Armoured Brigade, 18th Mechanized Division, proving their skill and resilience under the demanding conditions of the open sea.
With its blend of advanced ballistic instruction, hands-on training, and competitive spirit, the Mare Balticum Sniper Challenge is rapidly establishing itself as a permanent fixture in the maritime training calendar – and a benchmark for precision shooting excellence at sea.
