Russian and Chinese submarines conduct first joint patrols in Asia-Pacific

The Russian Pacific Fleet has confirmed that Russian and Chinese conventionally powered submarines have carried out their first joint patrols in the Asia-Pacific region. The operation followed the bilateral naval exercise Maritime Interaction – 2025, held earlier this month in the Sea of Japan.

Expanding operational cooperation

According to the Russian Navy, the patrols were intended to enhance interoperability, test coordination procedures, and strengthen operational ties between the two fleets. After completing their tasks, the submarines returned to their home ports.

The navy emphasized that the main objectives of the patrols are to deepen maritime cooperation, support regional stability, and protect the economic interests of both Russia and China at sea.

Broader naval engagement

The undersea mission came just two days after joint surface patrols in the central Pacific Ocean, which included anti-submarine warfare drills. That task group consisted of the Russian large ASW ship Admiral Tributs, the Chinese destroyer Shaoxing, and the PLA Navy’s supply ship Qiandaohu.

Strategic implications

Observers note that the involvement of submarines marks an important step forward in Sino-Russian naval collaboration. Previous exercises were largely limited to surface operations and aerial components, while submarine participation suggests a shift toward full-spectrum maritime capability integration.

Strategically, the patrols also serve as a demonstration of tightening defense ties between Moscow and Beijing, underscoring their intent to project stability and influence in the Asia-Pacific at a time of growing regional tensions.
