Both vessels have now joined Russia’s Mediterranean naval grouping, which currently consists of a submarine, its accompanying rescue tug, a frigate, a support tanker, and an intelligence-gathering vessel.
Two years ago, Russia maintained a significantly larger presence in the region, deploying around 15 warships drawn from its four main fleets, with the Black Sea Fleet providing the largest contingent due to geographical proximity.
Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria in December of last year, the new authorities in Damascus have barred Russian warships from using the naval facility in Tartus. Russia had maintained the 720th Material-Technical Support Point there, staffed by approximately 100 personnel tasked with servicing vessels operating in the Mediterranean.
Now, without access to Tartus, Russia must either rotate its ships more frequently or rely on port facilities in Algeria, which remains friendly to Moscow.
The Soobrazitelnyy, assigned to the Baltic Fleet, was built at the Severnaya Verf shipyard in St. Petersburg and commissioned in 2011. Primarily designed for patrol missions, the vessel is also capable of providing air defense and conducting anti-submarine warfare operations.
