Record financial and handling results

Polish seaports ended the year 2024 with record financial and operational results. The net profit of the largest ports increased by 26% compared to 2023, reaching a total value of over 551.7 million PLN. The Port of Gdańsk improved its result by 24%, which is an increase of 51.7 million PLN. The Port of Gdynia also achieved an impressive result, increasing its profit by 32%, gaining an additional 34.2 million PLN. The Szczecin-Świnoujście Port also ended the year with a very good result, recording a profit growth of 23%, i.e., 27.3 million PLN more than the previous year.

– These are very good financial results, which show that rational management and a professional workforce bring tangible results – said Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Arkadiusz Marchewka.

Noteworthy is also the increase in container handling, which reached a record 3,270,784 TEU, marking an increase of over 9% compared to 2023.

– These data clearly indicate that Polish ports have done an excellent job handling record-level cargo – added Deputy Minister Arkadiusz Marchewka.

Investments in port infrastructure

Over 2 billion PLN has been allocated in the 2025 budget for investments in the maritime economy. Key projects include the construction of the Deepwater Container Terminal in Świnoujście, which is currently in the preparatory stage. In April 2024, the West Pomeranian Voivode issued a final location decision for this project. According to the schedule, depending on the progress of the works, the investment is expected to be completed by 2028.

The Port of Gdańsk continues to develop its infrastructure, especially in the area of grain handling. On the Vistula and Szczecin quays, 9 new grain warehouses will be built, allowing for a fivefold increase in storage capacity – to 152,000 tons annually. The total value of the project is approximately 400 million PLN, and it will be carried out entirely by the state-owned company – Port Gdański Eksploatacja (PGE). Thanks to the investment, the company's handling capacity will ultimately increase from 0.7 million tons to 2.9 million tons annually.

An important part of the investment plans is also the construction of infrastructure for the FSRU regasification terminal in the Gdańsk port, as well as the continuation of the construction of the waterway connecting the Vistula Lagoon with the Gdańsk Bay. Thanks to an agreement with the local government of Elbląg, the last section of the waterway to the port in Elbląg will be deepened. The Maritime Office in Gdynia has already announced a tender for this investment, and the construction works are expected to be completed by Q2 2026 at the latest.

Building access infrastructure for Poland's first nuclear power plant

Another strategic project is the construction of access infrastructure for Poland's first nuclear power plant, which will be located in the municipality of Choczewo. As part of this project, the Ministry of Infrastructure is building the Marine Off-Loading Facility (MOLF) – a maritime structure enabling the unloading of heavy and oversized cargo required for the construction and operation of the power plant. The works include, among other things, a kilometer-long pier and a technical road.

Investments related to the construction of access infrastructure also include the modernization of railway line No. 230 between Wejherowo and Choczewo, as well as the construction of new sections of the line connecting the power plant with the existing railway infrastructure. The railway line No. 229 between Lębork and Łeba will also be modernized, and the first tenders for these investments are expected to be announced in 2025. Another component of the project is the construction of a new national road, which will connect the power plant with the Łęczyce junction on the S6 expressway. The investment has been divided into two sections, and an environmental decision has already been obtained for one of them.

A total of over 4.7 billion PLN has been allocated for the implementation of all these investments.
