A New Light Rescue Vehicle for OSP Jantar - A Strategic Investment in the Safety of the Vistula Spit

For years, the Volunteer Fire Department in Jantar (OSP Jantar) has played a vital role in ensuring the safety of both residents and visitors along the Vistula Spit. The unit specializes in rescue operations not only on land but also at sea, often responding to emergencies on beaches, in forested terrain, and on coastal waters. This diverse operational profile requires specialized equipment that can operate effectively in difficult and dynamic environments.

Several years ago, OSP Jantar managed to restore and adapt a decommissioned rescue vehicle originally marked for scrapping. Thanks to the dedication of local firefighters and the broader community, this vehicle—an aging Land Rover—was brought back to life and has since served as a core asset in coastal rescue operations. Critically, it remains the only vehicle in the municipality capable of towing the unit’s rescue boat, which is deployed almost daily during the summer season to conduct lifesaving missions on the Baltic Sea.

However, after many years of heavy use and exposure to harsh terrain, the vehicle has reached the end of its service life. Continuous maintenance has become unsustainable due to high costs and the unavailability of replacement parts. A full overhaul has been estimated at nearly 120,000 PLN—resources that could be more effectively used toward acquiring a modern, reliable light rescue vehicle.

OSP Jantar is now launching a fundraising campaign to secure a new off-road rescue vehicle. This acquisition will ensure operational continuity, increase safety, and strengthen the region’s emergency response capabilities—especially in maritime incidents.

The firefighters of Jantar stress that this is not just a vehicle—it is a lifeline. Without it, the unit risks losing the ability to respond quickly to water-related emergencies, potentially compromising the safety of those living or vacationing on the Vistula Spit.
